Northeast Georgia Rehabilitation Institute Unveils New State-of-the-Art Facility

The Northeast Georgia Rehabilitation Institute has celebrated the grand opening of its new rehabilitation hospital located in Gainesville, GA. This modern facility, which spans 62,000 square feet and boasts 40 beds, officially marks a significant investment in healthcare and rehabilitation services in the region.

A ceremonial ribbon-cutting event took place recently to commemorate the completion of the project, which originated with construction beginning in March 2024. This ambitious endeavor represents a collaboration between the Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) and Lifepoint Rehabilitation, a division of Lifepoint Health, aimed at enhancing the quality and accessibility of rehabilitation care in the community.

The newly constructed rehabilitation hospital is designed to deliver comprehensive rehabilitation care utilizing advanced therapeutic resources. The first floor is equipped with a therapy gym, inviting patient day rooms, and a full kitchen and dining area. Additionally, features include a mock bedroom and kitchen specifically for life skills training, ensuring patients can practice essential daily tasks.

On the second floor, visitors will find specialized therapy rooms and accommodation for 12 patients, particularly intended for individuals recovering from brain injuries. Embracing a holistic approach to recovery, the hospital also offers an outdoor courtyard with recreational therapy opportunities, including putting greens, bocce ball courts, and basketball courts.

This state-of-the-art facility nearly doubles the patient capacity from the previous 24-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC), effectively transitioning all rehabilitation services previously offered there to the new institute. This expansion is crucial to meeting the growing healthcare needs of the local population.

Among the advanced technologies now available at the center are robotics and virtual reality platforms specifically for neurorehabilitation, as well as dedicated areas for specialized therapy. This modernization underscores the institute’s commitment to utilizing the latest innovations in patient care.

The construction of the new facility was handled by Hoar Construction, which faced several challenges throughout the project, including unexpected weather conditions and schedule adjustments. Efforts were made to maintain smooth operations in surrounding businesses during construction, with temporary power solutions implemented to keep the project timeline on track despite interruptions caused by hurricanes.

The use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) was instrumental in effectively managing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing installations throughout the building process. Additionally, the prefabrication of patient room headwall units on-site generated significant time and cost efficiencies, further contributing to the project’s success.

Architectural services were provided by Earl Swensson Associates, Inc., while HVAC installations were managed by Lawson Mechanical. Other notable partners included AAA Commercial Flooring, Ryals Brothers for paving, Cole Masonry, and Enfinity Engineering, which served as the MEP engineer.

As the executive director, the leadership emphasizes that this new facility represents a significant advancement for specialty care in the region and is designed to address increasingly complex medical needs for patients at all stages of recovery. Lifepoint Rehabilitation will oversee daily operations, functioning as a joint venture with NGHS. This facility also joins Lifepoint’s expansive network of over 45 inpatient rehabilitation centers located nationwide, further solidifying Gainesville’s position as a healthcare hub within the community.
