Construction in Moorhead revitalizing the downtown area

News Summary

Moorhead is set for significant road construction and urban development. Upcoming projects include the 11th Street Underpass and enhancements to I-94 and the Red River Bridge. Residents are advised to prepare for traffic disruptions while the old Moorhead Center Mall will be demolished for new developments. Public safety and emergency response improvements are also on the agenda as the city looks to revitalize the downtown area. MnDOT emphasizes safety as Minnesota’s 2025 construction season plans nearly 180 road and bridge projects state-wide.

Moorhead Gears Up for Major Road Construction Projects and Urban Development in 2025

The city of Moorhead is set to undergo a series of significant construction projects in 2025 that promise to change the landscape and improve traffic flow. To keep residents informed and prepared, the city and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) held an open house. Attendees learned about the challenges ahead, emphasizing the importance of planning for altered traffic patterns during construction.

Traffic Challenges on the Horizon

Residents can expect traffic challenges as major construction projects begin this year. With multiple initiatives taking place simultaneously, it’s crucial for locals to plan routes in advance to avoid delays. The coming months will see heavy equipment and road closures impacting daily commutes.

11th Street Underpass Project Progress

A significant focus is the ongoing development of the 11th Street Underpass, part of a larger project amounting to nearly $115 million. This underpass aims to reduce the disruptions caused by heavy train traffic that have long affected local traffic flow. With winter work on the project nearly complete, full operational construction will resume as warmer weather sets in, allowing contractors to tackle the remaining unfinished tasks.

Upgrades to I-94 and Red River Bridge

MnDOT is also taking on upgrades to I-94 and resurfacing the Red River Bridge, which has an estimated budget of $3 million. Thankfully, most work on I-94 will occur at night, aiming to minimize the impact on daytime traffic. Residents can expect limited disruptions while still benefiting from the enhanced roadway.

New Development After Mall Demolition

In addition to roadwork, the demolition of the old Moorhead Center Mall is scheduled to begin soon. This redevelopment project will transform the area into a vibrant commercial and residential hub. It is anticipated that the mall reconstruction will take roughly 1.5 to 2 years to complete. Notably, the existing parking structure adjacent to the former Herberger’s will remain in place and be incorporated into the new development.

Improved Emergency Response

The developments underway also include measures designed to improve emergency response times for the nearby fire station. Updated infrastructure from the underpass and new projects will enhance the ability to respond more effectively to incidents in the area, benefiting the entire community.

Upcoming Traffic Impacts

As work ramps up, traffic impacts are set to intensify. Notably, a section of Main Avenue in Downtown Moorhead will close from 10th to 12th Streets starting June 2, which will affect local traffic patterns significantly. Additionally, First Avenue between 8th and 12th Streets will also see closures, shifting more vehicle traffic onto Center Avenue as drivers adjust to the changes.

Resumption of Train Horns in Downtown

To ensure safety during the project, MnDOT will reinstate train horns in the downtown quiet zone during construction hours, operating from 6 AM to 7 PM, Monday through Friday. This measure aims to notify residents and commuters of any potential hazards as construction progresses. The harmonized operation of train horns will be vital for maintaining safety in the bustling downtown area.

Statewide Construction Plans for 2025

2025’s construction season across Minnesota will include nearly 180 planned road and bridge projects. These initiatives hold the promise of enhancing roads, bridges, and transportation infrastructure while improving safety and promoting mobility throughout the state. Among the noteworthy projects, the reconstruction of Highway 371 in Northern Minnesota and various bridge repairs in the Twin Cities metro area are set to take place.

As construction ramp-ups continue, MnDOT stresses the critical need for safety in work zones. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the upcoming changes as Moorhead prepares for a transformative construction season.
