Kennedy Excavating Inc. Enhances Efficiency with Smart Construction Solutions

Greer, South Carolina, has become a burgeoning hub for site development with the impressive ascent of Kennedy Excavating Inc. Established in 2018 by Patrick Kennedy, alongside his father and brother Daniel, the company has rapidly transformed from a modest family operation to a noteworthy presence in the construction industry. With nearly 40 employees and growing, Kennedy Excavating has set its sights on expanding its project scope and workforce.

Initially focusing on small-scale operations, the company shifted towards commercial work after successfully acquiring another grading company. Patrick Kennedy’s roots in large-scale developments, enriched by experiences on a family farm and guidance from a seasoned construction manager, significantly shaped the company’s trajectory.

Operating over a broad geographical area, Kennedy Excavating undertakes projects along the South Carolina/Georgia county line and just north of Columbia, S.C. Their diverse portfolio includes commercial, industrial, residential, and municipal projects, showcasing a commitment to flexibility and a diversified approach in the industry. The company offers comprehensive sitework packages, encompassing paving, curbing, grading, utility installations, and stormwater management, accommodating projects that range from 1 acre to an extensive 100 acres.

A notable undertaking currently in progress is a substantial expansion project at the Fuyao Glass facility. This project entails grading a 14-acre site and constructing a 230,000-square-foot building pad dedicated to warehouse operations. The project poses unique logistical challenges, particularly in strategically phasing work around existing loading docks to maintain workflow.

To date, Kennedy Excavating has successfully hauled in approximately 43,000 cubic yards of material, with plans to import an additional 30,000 cubic yards to support the ongoing work. Integral to this project is the installation of a specialized stormwater management system, featuring an ADS water quality device, which will be only the second one of its kind implemented in upstate South Carolina.

A significant aspect of Kennedy Excavating’s operations is its investment in advanced technology. The company’s fleet mainly consists of GPS-equipped machines, including several Komatsu intelligent machine control (iMC) models. These machines, ranging from D39PXi-24 to D71PXi-24 dozers and PC210LCi-11 to PC490LCi-11 excavators, enhance efficiency and productivity in various projects.

The implementation of Komatsu Smart Construction solutions—specifically Remote, Field, Office, and Dashboard—has been transformative for managing the complexity of their expanding portfolio. Smart Construction ensures real-time connectivity among equipment, crew members, and essential project data, which aids in precise production tracking, scheduling, and cost control.

Through the Smart Construction Remote feature, the modeling team can upload revised site models directly to GPS-equipped machines, effectively eliminating the need for on-site visits and thus improving efficiency. The Dashboard and Office components further streamline operations by integrating job site data with financial tracking software, allowing for quicker decision-making processes. Additionally, the Smart Construction Field tool provides superintendents and foremen with vital job-specific information on tablets and laptops, refining workflow and project management.

Kennedy Excavating’s initiative to adopt these Smart Construction solutions is driven by the pursuit of long-term productivity gains and cost savings, particularly for large-scale jobs where financial risks are prominent. The company has collaborated with Linder Industrial Machinery Company for initial equipment setup and continues to benefit from ongoing support provided by Linder’s service and technology teams.

As Kennedy Excavating advances in the site development sector, their unwavering focus remains on delivering high-quality work and operational efficiency. Their commitment is not to become the largest company within the industry but rather aim for excellence in all their endeavors, ensuring each project is handled with utmost care and precision.
