Construction underway for the Golticlay onshore wind farm, set to contribute to Scotland's renewable energy goals.
RWE has officially started construction on the Golticlay onshore wind farm in Caithness, which will feature 11 turbines with a capacity of 62.7 MW. This renewable energy project aims to provide enough electricity to power approximately 84,000 homes annually by the end of 2026, contributing significantly to Scotland’s renewable energy initiatives and local economy, creating job opportunities, and advancing green technology collaboration.
RWE, a prominent power generator in the UK, has officially begun construction on the Golticlay onshore wind farm, located just 5 kilometers northwest of Lybster in Caithness, Scotland. With a total capacity of 62.7 MW, this project is set to contribute significantly to the renewable energy sector.
The Golticlay wind farm will feature 11 modern wind turbines, each exhibiting a height of 180 meters to the tip of the blades. Each turbine within the farm will have an individual capacity of 5.7 MW. Once fully operational, the wind farm is projected to produce enough renewable electricity to power approximately 84,000 Scottish homes on an annual basis.
Full power generation at the Golticlay wind farm is anticipated to commence by the end of 2026. This completion timeline reflects RWE’s commitment to advancing renewable energy projects in Scotland and aims to meet growing energy demands through sustainable sources.
RWE’s investment in the Golticlay wind farm not only supports the renewable energy sector but is also expected to foster local economic growth. The project is anticipated to generate significant economic benefits for the area, which is complemented by efforts to support local businesses during the construction phase. The main civil engineering contractor, Farrans, will oversee the construction operations and is focused on working with local suppliers.
Supporting the project’s construction will be local contractor Alan Gow Groundworks, which intends to employ around 25 people on-site throughout the duration of its contracted works. This focus on local employment underscores the project’s aim to benefit the community.
RWE has partnered with the Nordex Group to manufacture and supply the 11 Delta4000 series N149/5.7 turbines for the Golticlay wind farm. These turbines will be supplied via the nearby port of Wick, further reducing transportation costs and emissions related to logistics, thus aligning with the overall project goals of promoting sustainability.
The Golticlay wind farm is not the only project RWE is currently working on in Scotland. It joins a series of other wind initiatives, including Enoch Hill, which holds a capacity of 70 MW; Camster II at 36 MW; and Strathy Wood, also at 70 MW. Together, these four projects will boast a combined installed capacity of 231 MW, representing a significant investment in renewable infrastructure.
As the construction of Golticlay progresses, RWE remains focused on its goal of fostering green energy solutions in Scotland. This project highlights the company’s commitment to not only providing renewable energy but also ensuring community engagement and support throughout the development process.
With the increasing demand for sustainable energy sources, projects like the Golticlay wind farm play a critical role in shaping the future energy landscape of the region. With construction officially underway, the wind farm signifies a positive step towards enhancing Scotland’s renewable energy capacity and sustainability efforts.
