The groundbreaking anaerobic digestion facility by Convertus Group aims for sustainability and renewable energy production.
Convertus Group has secured approvals to construct Canada’s first integrated anaerobic digestion and biofuels facility in York Region, Ontario. Set to begin operations in 2027, this facility will process up to 200,000 tons of organic waste annually, converting it into renewable natural gas and organic fertilizers. The project, which aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions and promote a circular economy, has received strong support from local authorities and will benefit the region’s sustainability efforts.
Convertus Group has officially received all necessary approvals to start the construction of an innovative anaerobic digestion (AD) and biofuels facility in York Region, Ontario. This groundbreaking facility is poised to transform discarded organic materials into renewable natural gas (RNG) and organic fertilizers, marking a major advancement in sustainable waste management practices in Canada.
Located just north of Toronto, York Region boasts a population of approximately 1.1 million according to the 2021 census. As the first facility of its kind in Canada, it is set to revolutionize how organic waste is managed and recycled, contributing significantly to the local economy and environment.
Construction of the facility is expected to begin soon, with operations slated to start in 2027. Once operational, this facility will have the capacity to process an impressive 200,000 tons of organic waste annually from York and neighboring areas. This will not only streamline waste management but will also ensure that organic materials are put to productive use.
One of the key aims of the facility is to close the loop on waste management by adopting a sustainable and circular approach. By processing organic waste on-site, it is projected to avoid approximately 15,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions each year, thereby eliminating the need for transporting organic waste to distant locations for processing. This initiative signifies a substantial step forward in reducing the carbon footprint associated with waste management.
At full capacity, the York facility is projected to generate between 350,000 to 400,000 gigajoules (GJ) of RNG annually. The generated energy is planned to be injected directly into the local gas grid, contributing significantly to the reduction of fossil fuel usage and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions in the area. The facility embodies a practical solution to not only manage waste but also to create clean energy, setting a new standard for renewable energy production in Canada.
Convertus Group’s achievement in securing required approvals marks a significant milestone in the project’s development. The establishment of the facility has garnered support from local and provincial authorities, demonstrating strong collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing community sustainability initiatives. With these approvals now in place, Convertus is all set to advance to the construction phase, marking a pivotal moment in the pursuit of innovative waste management solutions.
The York facility will be distinguished as the first biofuel plant in Canada to implement integrated CO2 liquefaction technology, which highlights Convertus’s commitment to adopting advanced technologies for more effective waste processing. This technological edge will not only improve operational efficiency but will also enhance the quality of the produced RNG and fertilizers.
The developments related to the Convertus Group’s anaerobic digestion facility in York Region showcase a promising future for sustainable waste management and clean energy production in Canada. As it moves forward with construction, this innovative project is expected to set new benchmarks while encouraging a broader shift towards greener practices in the community. By transforming organic materials into valuable resources, Convertus is playing a crucial role in the transition to a more sustainable environmental future.
