First-Ever Construction Trade Career Fair to Combat Skilled Worker Shortage in Pensacola

The inaugural Construction Trade Career Fair is set to take place at Pensacola State College (PSC) on July 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event aims to tackle the growing shortage of skilled workers in the construction industry. With a significant demand for talent in the Pensacola metropolitan area, this career fair represents a crucial opportunity for both students and the general public to explore entry-level positions within the field.

The construction industry is facing a critical issue as many of its skilled workers are aging out, receiving promotions, or moving to other sectors of employment. This shift has resulted in an urgent need for new talent. Local organizations and companies are proactively working to create pathways for job seekers to enter the construction workforce. Estimates indicate that there are nearly 2,800 construction-related jobs in the Pensacola area, with approximately 25 jobs posted each month, suggesting a robust demand for skilled labor.

At the career fair, fifteen companies will be on hand, including notable names like American Magic, ST Engineering, and Comfort Systems USA. Each organization is actively looking to enhance their workforce by connecting with potential new employees. Local educational institutions, ranging from K-12 schools to higher education, are also playing their part in preparing the next generation of skilled workers to meet industry needs.

Debbie Douma, the dean of Grants & Federal Programs at PSC, shared insights about the various programs available to assist students in finding resources for education and training. The average annual median salary for construction roles in nearby Escambia and Santa Rosa counties hovers around $41,215. There’s potential for higher earnings with experience or specialization, making the construction field a promising career option.

Residential construction alone accounts for 18.3% of local jobs, while specialty trade contractors and foundation, structure, and building exterior contractors contribute 16.9% and 11%, respectively. Job postings from July 2024 to June 2025 reveal a monthly average of 16 postings for construction managers and 21 hires, alongside 9 job postings and 148 hires for construction laborers.

Those seeking employment in the construction sector are encouraged to apply in person, as many companies appreciate direct applications even if they do not have advertised positions online. Comfort Systems USA is one such organization that actively engages with potential employees. The company has been involved in significant local projects and plans to build a fabrication shop and office in Pace, Florida. They believe that a coachable attitude is essential for applicants and are known for their in-house apprenticeship programs.

The Haas Center has released new data that outlines the in-demand skills within the construction industry. These skills are categorized into three areas: necessary, defining, and distinguishing skills. Necessary skills are fundamental and relevant across similar positions, while defining skills are routine tasks that are essential for job performance. Distinguishing skills, while not frequently required, can set candidates apart and significantly impact salary growth.

Skills like construction management and project closure may enhance a job seeker’s salary potential, whereas skills such as residential construction and demolition might experience a decline in growth. The ongoing local efforts to attract new workers are essential in addressing the gaps in the construction workforce and promoting overall industry growth.

The Construction Trade Career Fair serves as a valuable resource for aspiring workers and underscores the importance of bridging the skills gap in this vital industry. By fostering connections between employers and job seekers, the event will play a significant role in nurturing the future of construction in the Pensacola area.
