An artistic rendering of the future Citadel headquarters tower, set to transform the Miami skyline.
Citadel has obtained FAA approval for its ambitious new 1,049-foot headquarters tower in Miami. This mixed-use development will feature over 1.4 million square feet of office space and a luxury hotel, transforming the Brickell skyline. Scheduled to begin construction soon, the project aims to enhance business growth in the area and strengthen Citadel’s presence in Miami’s financial sector.
Citadel has recently secured approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for an impressive 1,049-foot-tall supertall headquarters tower in Miami. The structure is set to be a significant addition to the skyline, contributing to the city’s ongoing transformation and growth as a hub for finance and technology.
The proposed tower, located at 1201 Brickell Bay Drive on a 2.5-acre site, will feature more than 1.4 million square feet of prime office space. This mixed-use establishment is designed by the renowned architectural firm Foster + Partners, known for their innovative and sustainable designs. In total, the building’s size will reach approximately 1.7 million square feet, accommodating various functions and amenities.
Occupying the upper levels of the tower will be a 212-room hotel, which is expected to attract both business and leisure travelers. Additionally, the tower will include upscale dining options, a grand ballroom, special event space, and a range of amenities aimed at enhancing the experience for both employees and visitors.
One of the tower’s most striking features will be its illuminated crown, offering a distinctive look that will further elevate Miami’s skyline. A landscaped amenity deck will also cap the structure, providing outdoor space for relaxation and social engagement.
The construction of this ambitious project is scheduled to begin later this year, although the permitting process is still underway and a contractor has yet to be named. Citadel’s FAA application indicated that the project will require three tower cranes, each reaching nearly 1,300 feet in height, making them the tallest approved construction structures in Miami’s history. Installation for these cranes is planned for this fall along the eastern, western, and southern sides of the site.
Citadel is partnering with Related Companies, a prominent developer based in New York, to bring this vision to life. The project team includes several notable engineering firms such as AAI Architects as the architect of record, Thornton Tomasetti for structural and resiliency engineering, Langan for geotechnical engineering, and Kimley-Horn and Associates handling civil and traffic engineering needs.
The site was previously acquired for over $360 million by Ken Griffin in 2022, following a history of multiple redevelopment proposals after the demolition of major structures in the early 1970s. The move comes as Citadel transitions its headquarters from Chicago to Miami, a change seen as a significant boost to the city’s financial sector and driven by concerns over public safety in Chicago coupled with a favorable business climate in Miami.
Currently, Citadel employs around 450 staff in Miami and aims to expand within this new headquarters, transitioning from its previous location where it occupied four floors at the Southeast Financial Center. The expansion of Citadel’s operations in Miami is part of a larger strategy that also includes enhancements in New York and London.
Future phases of the tower project will potentially introduce additional office spaces, residential units, and parking facilities. Importantly, a continuous public baywalk is also planned along the eastern edge of the property, promoting community access and enhancing Miami’s waterfront.
This upcoming landmark is expected to play a crucial role in solidifying Miami as a destination for business and tourism, marking a new chapter in the city’s architectural and economic landscape.
