Ongoing construction of the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway featuring new bridges and interchanges.
The Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway is nearing a $1 billion completion with significant progress on new bridges and interchanges. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has updated the project cost to $970 million, due to rising expenses. Construction of the southern section is on track to finish by the fall of 2027, which includes critical connectivity improvements. Meanwhile, federal funds remain unaffected by budget cuts, and significant earthwork has already been completed, paving the way for improved regional traffic patterns.
The Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway (CSVT) project in Pennsylvania is nearing completion with costs approaching a staggering one billion dollars. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently updated the project’s cost estimate to $970 million, marking a rise of $32 million from the previous year. This increase is primarily due to escalating material costs and final design enhancements.
Construction on the southern section of the CSVT, which mainly traverses Snyder County, is progressing according to schedule. The anticipated opening of the main line is set for the fall of 2027. An important feature of this project is the Route 61 connector, which is planned for completion by the following fall, facilitating a direct route to the Veterans Memorial Bridge leading into Sunbury.
To minimize traffic disruptions on the already congested Route 11/15, PennDOT made the decision to postpone the construction of the connector. As part of this connector project, a critical bridge over Route 11/15 will be replaced, improving access for southbound travelers heading towards Sunbury.
The CSVT project has experienced substantial progress with the completion of recent earthwork contracts. Currently, a second contract valued at $104.6 million is in progress, focusing on the construction of nine bridges and four noise barriers. The initial contract for the project was awarded to Trumbull Corporation for $115.2 million, and another contract worth $106.4 million was handed to Walsh Construction for the construction of new bridges.
In terms of earthwork, nearly all major excavation work is close to completion, with approximately 4 million of the total 4.5 million cubic yards of required excavation already finished. For drivers, local roads will be controlled by flagging operations during daylight hours when work is being carried out.
Since the opening of the northern section in June 2022, a notable reduction in truck traffic has been observed on Route 15 south of Lewisburg. Additional traffic data evaluations will be conducted after the mainline of the southern section opens, providing further insights into traffic patterns in the region.
Despite potential budget cuts from the Trump administration, funding for the CSVT should remain stable, with $430 million in federal funds already earmarked for the project. The project’s overall cost evaluation from PennDOT currently stands at $938 million, indicating careful fiscal management throughout the development process.
Once completed, the CSVT will establish a vital transportation link by connecting the Route 11/15 Selinsgrove bypass with Route 147 near Montandon. Furthermore, there are initiatives to submit an application to designate Route 15 as Interstate 99 between Interstate 180 and the New York State line.
In tandem with the CSVT developments, construction has begun on a high-speed interchange that will connect I-99 and I-80 in the Bellefonte area, enhancing overall traffic flow and accessibility across the region.
The continuing work on the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway represents a significant investment in the infrastructure of Pennsylvania, promising to improve transportation and connectivity for residents and businesses alike. Continued monitoring and updates will be critical as the project moves closer to its substantial completion date, providing a modern highway solution for the region.
