The Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage is embarking on a $257 million expansion to improve emergency services and address capacity issues. This project aims to increase patient care spaces and add behavioral health rooms, with construction expected to be completed by 2027. The expansion is prompted by a rise in emergency visits and the need for better surgical services due to growing community healthcare demands.
The Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC) in Anchorage is embarking on a transformative expansion project valued at $257 million designed to significantly upgrade its emergency services. This initiative, which has been authorized by the board of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC), aims to tackle the pressing capacity challenges currently faced by the hospital’s emergency department.
The hospital’s emergency department is grappling with widening capacity issues, largely due to a growing and aging population that the healthcare facility serves. Since its establishment in the early 1990s, the ANMC has experienced a surge of over 70,000 Alaska Native individuals, contributing to an increasing strain on the hospital’s resources. Administrators have reported high admission rates, which have affected scheduled non-emergency surgeries, leading to cancellations.
Patients often face uncomfortable situations due to inadequate care spaces; in some instances, patients have been compelled to receive treatment in hallways due to insufficient rooms. This current environment has emphasized the necessity for the expansion, which aims to add 21 new rooms to the emergency department. This addition will boost the center’s capacity to adequately handle patient needs and provide timely care.
Among the critical enhancements included in the expansion are new behavioral health rooms designed to better accommodate patients experiencing mental health crises. The construction of an updated ambulance bay is also planned, aimed at improving the efficiency of emergency arrivals. The existing ambulance bay’s configuration has only one entry point, complicating the process of bringing in patients during urgent situations.
The expansion will not only bolster emergency care facilities but also enhance spaces dedicated to surgery recovery and behavioral health treatment. This comprehensive approach seeks to improve patient flow and overall care quality at the facility.
Funding for this expansion includes nearly $30 million from congressionally directed spending, reflecting the support of local and federal resources aimed at addressing healthcare needs in the region. Furthermore, there is an ongoing effort to secure an additional $200 million for the next phases of expansion, which will involve the construction of three additional floors and the addition of a helipad to facilitate patient transport.
The demand for services at ANMC continues to rise, with the emergency department receiving around 45,000 visits in 2021, which surged to nearly 55,000 visits by 2023. There has also been a notable increase in surgeries performed at the hospital, with an additional 2,000 surgeries recorded in 2023 compared to figures from 2020. Long wait times are exacerbated by the state’s limited capacity in skilled nursing facilities, resulting in longer patient stays in the hospital.
As construction progresses, some existing services will face disruptions. Notably, the emergency department entrance will be relocated, and certain parking areas will be closed to accommodate the expansion efforts.
The first phase of the expansion is slated for completion by 2027. In addition to the expansion at ANMC, a new skilled nursing facility is set to begin construction later this summer, with an anticipated completion date in fall 2026. This proactive approach underscores a commitment to providing high-quality care within expanded, modern facilities that meet the growing needs of the community.
